The past three years have been especially difficult for Haiti. Covid hit quickly and all feeding programs and classrooms as well as the clinic required PPE for all staff as well as soap and water for the kids to wash before their meal. These were not easy to arrange. Testing was not a possibility so the virus had free run for a year. Some died, but most recovered as their immune systems are strong….
Hope Grows’ mission is to feed, clothe, house, educate and provide medical care for the people of Grand Goave, Haiti.
We support 3 schools in the mountain regions, one in Grand Goave, and an elementary school on our compound, providing an education for 500+ students. Instead of sponsoring children directly we find it more efficient to pay the teachers and allow any children in their area to attend free.
Our feeding program continues to provide up to 1500 hot meals a week in the impoverished area of Petit Paradis. Each day at one o’clock the gates open and hundreds of children pour into the church for a time of singing, stories and prayer. Then beginning with the smallest, the children file into our eating shelter where a drink and delicious hot meal of beans and rice wait for them. Aside from the ability feed their hungry bodies and nourish their soul, we also take this opportunity to teach lessons in order and respect for one another. It is always rewarding to see the older ones stopping to help the younger.
The building program is up and running. We have introduced a unique system that is bug proof, hurricane proof and earthquake resistant, having proved themselves through both hurricanes Matthew and Irma. We have also started a cement block-building program that offers more jobs and provides blocks for building. Our Haitian workers are trained in both systems and have been building homes, warehouses and all new projects on the go.
The mission compound houses a lodge for visiting medical and work teams, a clinic with a full-time nurse and part-time doctor, an active church for the community and a school also used on the weekends to teach English. Distribution of goods is carried out on a regular basis when we are able to bring down hockey bags stuffed with clothing, shoes, and school supplies. Containers are very difficult to get into the country successfully so each team coming carries a few bags for us.
